THE OFFERING
Its offering time! Everyone gets their offerings out to give to the Lord.
The Ushers come with the offering baskets to collect.
The choir is singing as the basket moves from hand to hand.
You notice almost everyone on your roll had their offerings tightly squeezed.
Sister Carolina did
not want anyone to see her drop her 100 naira offering before people would think she is the poorest.
Brother Colinus did not want his neighbors to see him put 1000 naira offering, they would think I have millions and I don't want to tell them.
Even little Jnr has his offering squeezed too. I bet he does not want everyone to see his small money.
The next two seats after you, you notice this lady with her hand squeezed like she is about to mold eba. As the basket gets to her, she quickly empties her hand inside and there it was, absolutely nothing came out.
Why are church members in this nasty habit of squeezing their offerings so tight before they drop it in the offering basket?
The average Nigerian finds it difficult to freely give his offering in church without going through these squeezing process. There is this negative thinking that letting your neighbor see your exact offering makes you look like a show-off.
Some churches have come up with the brilliant idea to provide envelopes, so their members can neatly put their offerings inside. Yet you would still see people squeeze their offerings before it gets into the envelope.
People! when you are giving an offering, you don't have to hide it before you put it in the basket or go the extra mile to squeeze it. It is your money, it is what you have to give, it is not your neighbor's money or anyone that is looking to see what amount you give. What you can afford is what you are giving so give it without the idea that you want to show-off.
For those People that take offering time as the time to look if Sister Cynthia or Brother Theophilus has money or not. Your topic is for another day.
