THE SMALL INCH - short story by ALIYU POKIMA

"For every time he cheats on me, let him lose an inch."
the ugly woman said in a whisper,
wary of the spirits that roamed the woods.

The native doctor stared at his little black pot and
shook his head in disapproval. Lines of worry ran along
his wrinkled face as he listened to the voice of the
carved deity resting ominously on the tree.

"Ahh!" he exclaimed and grabbed his crotch.
"Great one, her husband is a man like us.
We cannot do this wanton wickedness to a man like us."

Red smoke crawled out of the pot.


"Great one, let us kill him instead.
This thing this woman is asking for
is worse than death." he pleaded.

More red smoke oozed out.

With that, he removed the beads around his scrawny neck,
rubbed the chalk off his face and knocked down
the little black pot. "Nna, I no dey do again."
He turned to the ugly woman and said.
"Madam, go and cut the inch by yourself."

Red smoke filled the woods.
